I’d say I try to sing very technical and I try to use the right technique. My voice in itself has a slightly nasally tanner and I can sing pretty soft or strong depending on the song. I also have a lot of power in my voice mostly in head voice and when I belt. Ive got a pretty wide range. I’ve been told multiple times that I sound angelic when I sing as well.

a/n: this has been a year in the making sjdbdjsj. i watched arcane last year and absolutely fell in love with the characters (minus silco) and have been reading up on league of legends lore. a shit ton of research has gone into this, which somehow made this a lot more fun. i hope you enjoy!

Piltover was a suffocating place. The concrete and metal of its buildings and streets were daunting and stuffy, lacking the life and passion that you were used to.

“Keep moving,” the enforcer commanded, yanking the robe covering your body.

You huffed through your nose, the sound quiet as you continued shuffling along with the group of guards guiding you through the city, the cuffs on your wrist clinking with every step. Still, you proceeded to take in your surroundings, observing the near mechanical city that you were traveling through. The cement of the street felt hot under your feet as you walked, the sun beaming down particularly hard at this time of day. Your eyes traveled along to gaze at the people on the sidewalk, looking on at you with either curious or distasteful eyes.

‘How stuffy they look,’ you thought, your orbs falling onto the tight clothing adorning each of their bodies. ‘It must be difficult to breathe in that.’

Your attention was brought elsewhere upon the enforcer in front of you stopping abruptly, your head turning to gawk at the large building in front of you. It looked regal, the golden accents and door glowing in the sunlight. The walls were a creamy white, like many of the other buildings there, but the building itself seemed to have an air of professionalism and reeked of politics.

Your wonder didn’t last for long however, as you were once again pulled forward, your captors not quite the patient types. You stumbled up the stairs, your feet scrambling to catch yourself from the fall you surely would’ve suffered. You were led into the building, the halls silent save for the soft sound of your feet smacking the ground as you padded through the building and the chains of your cuffs bumping against each other. After a series of twists and turns, you're faced with two large doors, accented with gold and painted white, much like the rest of the facility. On either side of the entrance stood two enforcers, their eyes regarding you with cold, calculating eyes. From the other side of the doors you could hear individuals talking, seemingly discussing something. Suddenly, a call sounded from inside the room, signaling the enforcers to open the doors, revealing nine people sitting at a long surface, curved in a crescent shape.

The enforcers that escorted you here pushed you in, causing you to trip over yourself as you moved further into the room. Once you stilled, the doors closed, a resounding thud echoing through the lofty space. The room was dimly lit, the only source of light coming from the windows scattered around the room.

“Mage of Ionia,” a nasally voice called out, your gaze turning to the owner of it. Your eyes met those of a small creature– a yordle, you realized–, his body covered in fur and most of his face being obscured by a comically oversized mustache with eyebrows to match. His eyes, crinkled with age, regarded you with kindness but held caution underneath. “I am Heimerdinger and this is the council. Please state your name so that we may proceed with your hearing,” he demanded.

“Are we even sure they can understand us? Seeing as Ionia separated itself from the rest of the world,” another council member called. His frame was long and skinny, blond hair slicked back as he peered at you with an unimpressed frown. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t even receive a proper education, what with the Ionians and their hippie-flower-magic nonsense–”

“I can understand you just fine,” you cut him off, your statement making him freeze in his seat, “And my people’s teachings are not to be mocked by those who lack the intelligence to comprehend them.”

His eyebrow twitched as he opened his mouth to retort when he was stopped by a different council member. “Stop it Salo. We have no time for your childish remarks,” a woman voiced. Her skin was fair and she had short, dark hair with a streak of white in the front.

Salo cleared his throat, straightening his coat and sitting back in his chair, but not before throwing a bitter glare your way.

“I apologize for my comrade’s comment, he is quite nervous seeing as you are a mage,” Heimerdinger stated, a tinge of hesitancy in his voice. That left a sour taste in your mouth. You forced yourself to hold back the angry comment that lied at the tip of your tongue, swallowing down the bitter frustration. “Now, your name please,” Heimerdinger asked once again.

“I am Y/N,” you voiced, your tone firm as you stared at the small yordle.

“Y/N,” he nodded, reaching forward to open a file that was sitting in front of him, “You were found on the outskirts of Piltover, performing magic, which is an illegal offense,” he droned on, any kindness within his eyes gone, having been replaced by disappointment and fear.

Your eyes narrowed at him, barely concealing your annoyance. “I performed magic when your guards attacked me. I was defending myself,” you grunted, eyeing the enforcer in the corner who had moved for the baton on their hip. You gulped. “Surely, you can see that I have done nothing wrong–”

“Nothing wro–! Three enforcers are in critical condition because of your uncontrollable Ionian blasphemy!” an old man with a thick, bushy beard shouted, “Magic is illegal for this exact reason! It’s too dangerous to be harnessed.”

You fingers twitched from within your bindings, wanting to shut the old man up. You refrained, however, giving him a menacing glare instead. It seemed to have worked, seeing as his face morphed from anger to fearful.

“Hoskel, please. Let’s at least be civilized and calm enough to come to a rational decision,” another woman spoke.

Your gaze darted to her, your breath catching in your throat. She was stunning, dark skin, telling of her Noxii heritage, accented by her gold makeup and jewelry. Her hair was a mass of twists held together with gold cuffs, pulled into an intricate bun at the top of her head. Her eyes met your own, a warm smile pulling at her plump lips as she regarded you. You quickly dropped your eyes to the floor, the cool tile suddenly much more interesting.

“Now, now,” Heimerdinger chimed, “This is a trial, everyone. Let us treat it as such,” he chastised. “While I am sure you are much more used to openly using your magic in Ionia, we in Piltover find it far too volatile to allow it to be used so freely without proper consequences.” His eyes were trained on your form, watching as you shook with what he assumed to be fury.

“He is right,” a muffled voice added. You turned your head to look at the owner, only to be met with the holes of some kind of mechanical person. “My people were nearly destroyed because of arcane magic. We cannot become lax with our laws because of an Ionian stowaway.”

“I say we put them in Stillwater with the rest of the miscreants,” Salo declared, a smug grin sweeping across his face.

“Now let’s not be too hasty. We still haven’t heard from our newly minted council member,” the Noxii council member spoke, her gaze turned to the young man sitting next to her.

His olive skin shone with sweat, his expression nervous as he surveyed you with curious eyes. He cleared his throat, fidgeting with his fingers before finally speaking. “I think it would be beneficial to the Hextech Project if we were to have a mage to advise us about arcane magic.”

Your gaze shot up at him as your orbs widened. A cacophony of disapproval rang throughout the room.

“You can’t possibly be serious–”

“They’re too dangerous to be walking around the city freely–”

“You’ve gotten on fine without a mage! Why would you need one now–”

“Enough!” the Noxii councilor shouted, her face stern. “We will hear Jayce out, seeing as Hextech has been what’s making our city thrive in recent years.” That seemed to have gotten the rest of the council to simmer down, most of them begrudgingly shutting their mouths.

I have seen the wonders magic has done for me, for my people. All because we have chosen to live with it, not fight it or use it. You wish to punish me for being a mage, when you yourselves are wielding it for your own gain,” you asserted, your eyes catching the way Heimerdinger looked down in shame. “People like you are the reason why magic is seen as a threat,” you concluded bitterly.

“That’s exactly why we’re creating Hextech,” Jayce proclaimed, looking to you with a hopeful gaze, “We want to show people that magic isn’t evil, and that it could be extremely helpful in the lives of common folk.”

“Allowing those who have not been blessed by the arcane themselves to wield it is exactly why the “dangers” of magic exist. If the arcane wanted to gift magic to all, then it would have,” you vetoed.

“Y/N,” your focus on Jayce is broken when you turn to the Noxii councilor, “I understand your concerns about civilians using magic—,”

“No, you do not—,” you combat swiftly.

“But,” she stressed, her eyes narrowing, daring you to cut her off again. “Times have changed. And you would agree that change is a natural order, yes,” she smiled, her brown orbs holding a sly glint when she saw your gaze turn to the floor. “I’ll take that as a yes,” she continued, “We are in the middle of an age of progress. The incorporation of arcane magic into people’s everyday lives might be exactly what we need to rid any fear of mages.” You looked to her, your eyes searching for anything insincere, anything untrustworthy, but you found nothing. She grinned hopefully, her eyes bright. “If you help us, we’ll be a step closer to making the world a better place for everyone. Including mages.”

You pondered on her words, letting them circle your brain as you searched for an answer.

Seeing your hesitancy, Jayce spoke up. “You’ll receive a full pardon if you agree to help us!” he rushed out, inciting another round of chaos amongst the council.

“Quiet!” shouted the yordle from the head of the table, effectively silencing everyone.

He turned to Jayce. “If you truly believe that they will be of great service to Hextech, then I am willing to put aside my beliefs to pursue this new age of science you’ve brought about.”

Jayce’s grin lit up the room, his excitement palpable. The rest of the council had reactions of varying types, most of which were anger and disappointment.

jae tanner, born on november 5, 1970 in manhattan, new york, was the son of a conservative strict mother and a rough around the edge father with a secret background.

his real name was tan jae kyung.

his mother worked as a cashier for a korean supermarket and his father did jobs that ... that didn’t require him to pay taxes. they went like this until he was eight, when they had enough money to own a korean restaurant, which he himself worked in until their closing

growing up, he learned the korean language and customs, but kept his “asian” side at home when he was with his friends. he also grew up with a big love for his father. it drove his mother crazy when he did bad things in his teens years, something his father encouraged.

his father was the start of jae’s introduction to his voice alteration abilities he has now. his father was the first to noticed how jae’s tone frequently changed when he spoke korean and english and how he mimicked his family and friends. his father, a man who also had the ability to adjust his voice, taught him certain techniques regarding the throat and nasal cavity to adjust his voice to resemble others.

(headcanon: mr. tan was a con artist who called old people and pretend to be the irs or their family needing money. mrs. tan didn’t know about this.)

his first test was with his mother, mimicking his own father. it took him a few trials before he succeeded.

with this learning experience from his father and the growing boom of beatboxing in harlem, jae took it a step higher, incorporating the skills he learned from his father in his beat box. he did pretty well with his talent and could have been compared to the o.g. beat boxers if he stuck around.

beatboxing unfortunately for jae was also his demise when a vampire named daniel took notice of his talent and turned him one night on his way home.

kidnapped and kept at daniel’s place, he woke up a new person, and livid at the man who changed him. he attempted to go home but stopped after nearly killing his mother. he attempted to kill daniel multiple times afterwards.

he stuck with daniel and committed a lot of petty crime with his ability; making jae grow to despise his creator ‘cause the deeds he did reminded him of home. he left once he knew he wouldn’t be followed, and that was shorty after daniel found a new subject who accepted him as a mate. 

free from daniel, he learned to adjust to his life as a vampire by himself. he lived in a cabin for a few years before traveling and living in motels from time to time. his tolerance of blood was better when he fed extra before going into a town to spend time around humans.

(he got lonely sometimes, don’t blame him ... and beatboxing and doing voices for humans to get money was a plus!)

when the internet came along, he used the venue to his advantage and sold noise tracks, voice recordings, and other things to make a better buck. by this point, he adopted the name jae tanner to gain more customers; he was also really popular in the indie field.

by the news of the cullens, he decided to go to forks to see what the story is all about.

vocal mimicry is the ability to mimic someone’s voice perfectly. jae has had a talent for it since he was a child and the practice with his father helped solidify his chances of this ability. 

for jae, he just needs to hear a little snippet of someone’s voice to be able to mimic their voice completely. he has used this in his music sales, selling snippets of his voice for backups and other uses, and has also used it to lure people in when they don’t come with him for him to feed.

Original A/N: This story follows the third season episode "Been There, Done That." I chose this title long before it was used for a fourth season episode of X:WP, so I'm not changing it.

Xena awoke in a room touched by dawn's first light, with Gabrielle tucked firmly against her side. She stifled the impulse to tighten her embrace, but couldn't resist basking in the warmth and comfort of their closeness. This was her favorite time of the day...and the most dangerous. If she allowed herself to reflect too much — or feel too much — the rest of the day would be sheer torture. With a sigh, she obeyed the stern inner voice that was urging an immediate end to this self-indulgence.

Fortunately, the young bard slept so soundly that she didn't stir when Xena edged herself away. Neither did she stir under the unwavering gaze of the ex-warlord who studied the curve of her cheek, the flaming color of her hair spread across a pillow, the soft swell of her breasts...With a guilty start, Xena shifted her attention to the curled fingers of Gabrielle's hand; the tip of her index finger was stained with ink from writing in her scrolls the night before.

Plan, I need a new plan. Xena waited for inspiration to strike, but nothing came to mind. She had stalled too much this morning and lost her momentum. Maybe I'll just wing it.

She shook Gabrielle awake with a briskness that could not be mistaken for a caress. "Come on!" she urged her groaning bedmate. "If we don't get to the town market early, some of the best bargains will be gone."

Gabrielle's eyes sprang open. "You want to go shopping?"

"Take advantage of my mood. It's only good for today."

"Shopping it is," cried Gabrielle, flinging aside the covers and scrambling out of bed.

Even in a bustling marketplace, crowds parted at Xena's approach. She had grown so used to that reaction that she didn't bother side-stepping anyone in her path; she just assumed everyone would move aside. But this morning one man wasn't paying attention to where he was going, and he barreled right into her.

"Watch it," growled Xena, throwing him off. "You're already walking on thin ice with me."

"You know him?" asked Gabrielle, watching the bewildered man flee after one glance at the warrior's scowl.

"No, he just looked like a jerk." In answer to Gabrielle's dubious expression, she said, "Instinct. Trust me."

The brief encounter had cost them precious time. Picking up her pace, the warrior threaded her way through the pottery and basket section, past the dried meats, and took a sharp turn to her left. She ignored Gabrielle's breathless call to slow down. This was going to be close.

Xena took a running step and lunged. "Got it!" she exulted as her hand whisked a silk tunic out from under the hand of another customer.

"What are you doing?" asked Gabrielle as she ran up to the stall.

Shoving the tunic into Gabrielle's arms, Xena said, "Your color, your size, and the merchant will take six dinars for it."

"No way, lady!" protested the vendor. "That's a ten-dinar—"

"Here." She flung six coins at the man, then grabbed Gabrielle by the elbow and pulled. Left to her own devices the bard would dawdle, and Xena was determined to make up for their late start.

"Xena," protested Gabrielle as she was dragged away from the clothing wares.

"Necklace next," muttered Xena. "Then perfume. But no rouge. I didn't like the rouge."

"Xena!" The bard yanked her arm loose, bringing her forced march to a stop. "What is going on?"

Xena quickly ran through her repertoire of stock cover stories, but somehow none of them sounded very convincing. She suspected the day was already a loss, so this time — for sheer novelty's sake — she opted for the truth. "It's that repeating day thing...again."

Gabrielle frowned, but she didn't argue. In fact, to Xena's relief, her friend seemed to accept the situation with admirable composure. "How long has today been...today?"

"Twenty times now. Or maybe it's twenty-one. I dunno," said Xena glumly. "I'm losing count. Doesn't really matter since it's the same day over and over and over..."

"I'd ask for details, but I assume I haven't been much help so far." Some revealing emotion must have flickered across the warrior's face because Gabrielle's frown deepened. "Xena, you have told me about this before?"

Damn. "Not really," confessed Xena. Definitely not a good day. "There didn't seem much point. I've already figured out the solution — it's the details that are giving me trouble."

"I see," came the icy response. "So now you're desperate enough to actually tell me about it." With a withering glare, Gabrielle whirled away into the crowd.

"Gabrielle, wait!" She chased after the bard, finally catching up to her in the middle of the town square, in plain sight of the sweet-faced elderly woman who was the village gossipmonger. In a desperate attempt at damage control, Xena pulled her friend over to the fountain where the sound of rushing water would help cover their voices. "I haven't told you before because," she took a deep breath, "you're the cause."

"Great! Now you're blaming me for this!"

"Look, it was your invocation to Cupid—"

"You read my scrolls?" shouted Gabrielle, oblivious to the startled look of bystanders. "My private scrolls!!"

Xena winced in the face of the bard's seething anger. "Just one, the one you wrote the night before all this started."

"That poem was none of your business!"

"Obviously Cupid didn't agree," said Xena firmly, then she recited the lines that had caught her eye.

"Call Apollo's chariot back, Let time itself bide, While I wait for my love to speak..."

"By the gods," moaned the author of the poem as she sank down on the fountain wall. "This is so embarrassing."

"Don't worry about it." With a wry smile, Xena added, "After all, you won't remember any of this."

"But you will," said Gabrielle bleakly.

Xena shrugged. "Hey, it's my job. I do the repeating thing until true love gets back on course, then I get my life back."

Gabrielle looked very pale, even in the rosy light of morning. "Only this time," she swallowed hard, "the solution—"

"Is driving me crazy," admitted Xena with a frustrated sigh. She sat down beside the bard. "I've fixed you up with every eligible bachelor in town, and every morning I wake up back at the inn." With Gabrielle lying in the embrace of her arms...but the less she thought about that, the better for everyone involved.

Gabrielle looked at her with a quizzical expression. "You did what?"

Uh oh, I'm in trouble again, thought Xena. "I, uh, just tried...to help things along. But obviously I'm not much of a matchmaker, because we're still here."

"New clothes, perfume, jewelry..." Gabrielle stared down at the tunic still clutched in her hand and began to laugh, although with an edge of hysteria. "Guess you can't dress up a sow's ear, even in silk."

"Hey," said Xena indignantly. "You're not the problem."

"I'm not?"

"Actually you are, but not in that way. As it happens, you're very attractive—"

"I am?"

"—and the guys are willing," said Xena quickly, anxious to move out of dangerous territory. "Too willing sometimes, but I took care of that one. All the others were passable, it's just that you're so...picky."

For some reason Gabrielle seemed to have recovered her good humor. In fact, Xena could swear she saw a twinkle in the young woman's eyes when she said, "I have high standards."

"Yeah, don't I know it." She nodded at a young man who was strolling by. "That's the town tailor. His voice is too nasal." Then she pointed at the somewhat portly man who followed along next. "Merchant, smacks his lips too often."

As if testing her, Gabrielle asked, "The guy buying a hat?"

"Dandruff. Pops his knuckles."

"The man eating figs?"

"Willing, but already married."

"Just how many men in this town have I dated?"

"All of them, it seems," sighed Xena. And none of them had pleased her young friend.

Gabrielle continued incredulously. "That one?"

"Vinter. Boring."

A man in very fancy clothes strutted across the square. "What about—"

"Don't ask," said Xena grimly. She'd killed that one. Not a good night. She scanned the crowds until she found a safer subject. "Potter, too self-centered. Weaver, laughs too much." She shrugged in response to Gabrielle's startled look. "Okay, so it was a long shot, but she was a better prospect than the candlemaker who chewed with his mouth open. Or the tanner who wouldn't stop talking about his bunions."

"It's no wonder you're still repeating days," said Gabrielle with a roll of her eyes.

"Okay, I give up!" cried Xena. "Who? Who would do?"

With a shake of her head, the bard said, "I don't think I'm the issue here."

"What's that mean?"

"And I don't think the solution can be...handed to you."

"It's worth a try," countered Xena peevishly. She had run through all the likely prospects, and a great many very unlikely ones, too. The least Gabrielle could do was narrow the field a bit.

"You know," said the bard, "you need a vacation."

"What?"

"Look, take the day off. What can it hurt? Get your mind off the problem and tomorrow...er, today...whatever, you'll approach the situation with a fresh outlook."

"Hmph." The suggestion was more appealing than Xena cared to admit, but she felt compelled to offer at least token resistance.

"Besides, I'm not going out on a date tonight," said Gabrielle firmly. "So you might as well call it quits for the day."

"And do what?"

"Well...there isn't much point in shopping since I won't get to keep anything, and you've probably seen all the sights in town," Gabrielle grinned at Xena's weary nod of agreement, "so that leaves eating. Let's have a picnic."

Oh, why not? thought Xena. A familiar plan, with a few slight modifications, would set them up quite nicely. "One picnic coming right up." She sprang into motion, beckoning her companion to follow her back to the market.

A dinar bought the wicker basket they needed; the rest of their provisions required nothing more than a good sense of timing.

"You've done this before," observed Gabrielle wryly as Xena snatched a fresh loaf of bread just as it was jolted off a passing cart.

"A few times," admitted Xena, dropping the bread into the basket. "Fruit next, if we hurry." And she got them to the corner just as the apple vendor started to pelt the peach vendor with his produce. In the resulting melee, they quickly gathered a few more items for their lunch.

"What was that all about?" asked Gabrielle.

"I never bothered to find out." And with any luck, she would never have to untangle the history of that particular feud. There were limits, after all, to how much Xena wanted to know about the tedious inhabitants of this village.

"Hey, that's stealing," cried Gabrielle when Xena lifted a bottle of port out of a straw-packed crate tucked into the doorway of an open shop.

"Don't worry," said Xena with a grin. "In about three minutes the vintner will drop this crate down the cellar stairs. No one will notice one missing bottle."

Just as no one would blame her for the theft of a wheel of cheese that was perched on a nearby window ledge. If she didn't take the cheese, a neighbor's cat would. Even so, Gabrielle insisted on leaving her new silk tunic, neatly folded, as payment.

"Sure, go ahead," said Xena with a shrug. "Either way, I'll have to buy it again tomorrow."

With the basket fully loaded, the warrior led them down a narrow alley. "I decided the tavern was a little too noisy for good conversation, so I found this spot a few days ago." Opening a wooden door, she ushered Gabrielle inside a walled garden. "The owners are out of town and forgot to bar the gate."

"It's very romantic," said Gabrielle approvingly as she noted the carefully tended flowers and stepped under the graceful, spreading limbs of a shade tree. "Who did I come here with?"

"Tavernkeeper's son. Very nice young man — clean, well-spoken, intelligent." And slight enough of body that Gabrielle could easily have disabled him if his romantic enthusiasm had outstripped hers. Not that Xena's caution had proved necessary.

"What went wrong?"

"Nothing," said Xena. "You both had a lovely evening — talking your heads off. Turns out he's in love with the weaver's nephew."

Gabrielle began to laugh.

"Who knew?" said Xena sheepishly. "But at least you had a good time."

The laughter trailed off. "What about you?"

"Hmmm?" Xena busied herself spreading out the blanket, keeping her face safely averted. Despite her stoic warrior's mask, Gabrielle was getting altogether too good at reading her emotions.

"What did you do," Gabrielle persisted, "while I was out on the town?"

"Oh, I kept busy." Xena pulled the cork out of the bottle of port. It was an excellent vintage, but it had taken two bottles a night to get her through those first few evenings. Which was why she'd been too drunk to stand the sight of Gabrielle being groped by the town mayor, and why she'd been just drunk enough to behead him in a blinding rage. In the middle of the tavern dining room. A very bad night indeed.

After that, she'd passed the time winning knife-throwing tournaments and keeping a watchful but sober eye on the disastrous progress of Gabrielle's courtships. It was actually less painful than she had expected. Her imagination had painted lurid scenarios of Gabrielle in fevered embraces with her suitors; in reality the young bard looked glassy-eyed with boredom rather than passion. With few exceptions, she had showed more interest in her supper than in the men sitting across the table from her.

"So how did you arrange for these dates?" asked Gabrielle as they settled themselves down onto the blanket. "Did you hold men at sword point or did you just pay them to ask me out?" That smart-aleck quip earned her a swift poke in the ribs. "Ow!"

"It wasn't a very challenging task for an ex-warlord." Xena fished out her breast dagger and began to slice fruit while Gabrielle unwrapped the cheese. "All I had to do was strike up a casual conversation with someone, then mention that you found him attractive. One look at you and they pretty much took it from there."

"Yeah, yeah." With a quick sidelong glance, Gabrielle said, "But how did you talk me into going out with all those guys?"

"I didn't have to talk you into going out with all of them, just one of them."

"Oh...right."

Even then, it hadn't been easy, Xena recalled. Wheedling and cajoling hadn't been very successful. Oddly enough, she'd had the best luck with studied indifference. If she said, "Makes no difference to me what you do tonight," and returned to sharpening her sword, then Gabrielle inevitably replied, "Fine. I will go out." Of course, any satisfaction Xena might have felt in this clever maneuver was quickly drowned out by the knowledge it could lead to her ultimate success that night. She had never approached any battle with such a dread of winning.

Which might account, in part, for her continued failure, admitted Xena with an edge of guilt. But at least for this one day she was safe from any such dilemmas. There were no surprises left for her in this predictable little town, so she could afford to lower her guard and drift into a hazy appreciation of food, drink and Gabrielle's undivided attention. And when her friend got up to wander around the garden gathering flowers, Xena even allowed herself to gaze at the lithe young body a little more openly than she ever had before.

She was savoring the last few swallows of the port when Gabrielle knelt down behind her. "Hey, stop that," Xena said, although without much force, when she felt the slight tug of hands starting to braid her hair. She groaned at the first tickle against her scalp. "Not flowers, too?"

"I've always wanted to do this."

"I feel foolish." But she didn't pluck them out.

"Today's a day when you can be silly and no one will ever know — not even me."

"You're enjoying this," grumbled Xena.

"Yes, I am." Having finished her braiding, Gabrielle plopped down beside the warrior. "But it's strange when I realize I won't remember any of this," she waved her hand at the garden and the remains of their picnic, "and you will. If it was the other way around..." She shook her head and laughed ruefully.

"What would you do?"

To Xena's surprise, the bard actually blushed. "Umm...things...that I might not have the...courage to do on an ordinary day."

"What things?"

"Oh, no," protested Gabrielle. "That's not fair. This isn't a day for me to reveal secrets. You're the one with the advantage here." She leaned close to adjust the stem of one of the flowers. "Just think, Xena, you can live out your fantasies. What do you want that you've never let yourself have? Today, you can just take it." She must have sensed the impact of her words. "What is it, Xena?"

"Nothing - I...nothing."

"I've never seen you afraid before," said the bard softly.

Xena closed her eyes, knowing they would give her away, knowing that if she kept gazing at Gabrielle she would give in to temptation and...and why not?

She opened her eyes, and Gabrielle was still there.

"Do you know what you want?" asked the bard.

"Oh, yes. I've known for a long time." She raised a hand to Gabrielle's face and brushed fingers along the line of her jaw. "But..."

"But what?" and the warmth of the young woman's breath tickled Xena's wrist.

"But nothing." And she met Gabrielle's lips with her own.

The kiss was sweet and tender. She had expected Gabrielle to be startled, perhaps even to pull away. When she didn't, Xena was tempted to lean closer, kiss harder, to forge memories that...that would make tomorrow's task even more difficult than it was already.

Breaking away, she stammered, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have...I only meant - " Then, with a soft sigh, she said, "At least you won't remember this."

"Won't I?" replied Gabrielle with a growing smile. "That poem I wrote was about you."

Xena froze, then swallowed hard. "No! No, wait, Gabrielle. I can't be the one!" Her mind groped for words that would dim the sparkle in those blue-green eyes. "You deserve someone who can make you happy and keep you safe, someone who—"

"I love you, Xena," said Gabrielle firmly. "There's nothing you can do to change that. So stop trying to make my decisions for me."

"But—"

"It's your turn now. Do you love me? Yes or no. Either answer will get us out of this mess. It's your silence that trapped us here."

It was too late to lie. The truth was hovering between them, waiting to be spoken aloud. "Yes," confessed the warrior. "The answer has always been yes."

Their second kiss was even sweeter than the first. And it lasted longer. Much longer. Then it deepened in a way that turned yearning into hunger. Out of lingering habit, Xena still held back, still fought to keep her rising passion in check...until Gabrielle whispered in her ear. "You'd better make this a night to remember, because I will this time."

The bard knew her all too well, mused Xena as she pushed the young woman down onto the blanket, then covered the slender body with her own. She never could resist a challenge.

Abbott Laboratories’ test granted emergency use authorization August 26 also is an antigen test and, with its card-based technology, is even simpler. Abbott, based in Abbott Park, Ill., said its test was able to detect 34 of 35 COVID-19-positive patients with symptoms, or 97 percent, in initial studies.

The benefit: An antigen test doesn’t require any specialized lab instruments or enzymes. “It’s all self-contained,” Hamad-Schifferli says. Without a step to amplify viral material, however, an antigen test can be less sensitive than PCR or LAMP and result in a higher rate of false-negative results, up to 20 percent per the FDA’s emergency use authorization guidelines for antigen tests.

That’s because people may produce widely varying amounts of virus, depending on how long has passed since they became infected. In most people, the coronavirus is most abundant from a couple of days after infection to about nine days into the illness (SN: 3/13/20). After that, the immune system kicks in, preventing viruses from being made. On the other hand, viral RNA can be detectable in some people for more than a month.  A negative result from an antigen test has a higher chance of being false comfort, so the FDA says that diagnosis may need to be confirmed with another type of test, like PCR.

A new kind of rapid test

Even though antigen tests typically are not as accurate as standard PCR or the new rapid tests, they could play a crucial role helping to end the pandemic — if their use becomes widespread. As of now, though, even Abbott’s 15-minute test still needs to be ordered by a doctor and performed in a health care setting, so that can provide hurdles to its use. But what if people didn’t even have to leave home to get a test?

That’s what Hamad-Schifferli and her colleagues are working on. The idea is to build a cheaper test that doesn’t involve a dedicated instrument — just a paper strip and a signal detectable by eye. Such a simple test could be used more widely by people at home. “It would be a game changer,” she says.

If COVID-19 tests are deployed widely enough, they could serve as a public health measure to identify people with high levels of SARS-CoV-2 and spreading the virus to others, even if they’re not displaying symptoms. That’s because frequent and fast tests can be used to pinpoint outbreaks as they are happening (SN: 7/1/20).  If cheap enough, these tests could be used by people daily, catching any missed detections through repeated rounds of testing.

The United States is currently testing nearly 700,000 people a day on average, based on data from August 21 through August 27. Michael Mina, however, wants to see even more tests, like “200 million tests … every day in this country.” Surveillance provided by such widespread testing “will effectively do the same thing as a vaccine” in slowing the spread of the coronavirus says Mina, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

But for daily, population-wide testing that could alert people when they first start transmitting the coronavirus to be adopted, a test needs to be cheap enough — for instance, under a dollar — for many people to use them frequently. Abbott said its tests would cost $5. Quidel’s test cartridges cost $23 apiece and the other RADx-funded rapid tests are likely in a similar price range. Given their higher accuracy, those tests could serve a separate purpose: to conclusively determine if an individual is infected and ensure they receive treatment.

The holy grail of tests may be one that is fast, easy, accurate and inexpensive and that could be used broadly — even by people at home. One group of scientists may be among those nearing that goal. The work is led by Abudayyeh, Jonathan Gootenberg and Feng Zhang, all bioengineers at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT. Zhang is also at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University.

The team adapted an FDA-authorized test by Sherlock Biosciences in Cambridge, Mass., that uses the gene-editing tool CRISPR. All someone has to do is add a sample — either from a nasal swab or saliva — to a tube with a reaction solution, heat the tube to 60° C for an hour in a pot of water, then add a paper test strip to the tube. If two lines appear, that means SARS-CoV-2 RNA is present.

The readout relies on activity of a CRISPR enzyme, Cas12b. If SARS-CoV-2 RNA is present in the reaction, Cas12b cuts what’s called a reporter, a short piece of DNA that’s labeled on both ends. The two halves of the reporter then wick up the paper strip to different places and appear as two lines. If viral RNA isn’t present, the reporter remains intact and wicks up the strip to one place, showing up as one line.

The new test, STOPCovid, is not yet authorized for clinical use, but based on tests in a small number of patients, it identifies SARS-CoV-2 cases as well as PCR tests, the researchers reported May 8 in a preprint posted at medRxiv.org. It returns results in about an hour and would cost under $10, they say.

Unlike rapid tests relying on docks and cartridges, the STOPCovid test is uniquely designed to scale up to millions of tests per week, says Gootenberg. “There’s never been a demand for millions or tens of millions of tests per week — ever.”

Other research groups have also developed similar CRISPR-based COVID-19 tests (SN: 4/17/20).

With the development of so many new technologies to test for the coronavirus, “we’re going to come away from the epidemic with a whole new field of diagnostics,” Mina says.
